A novel Schiff base ligand has been prepared by condensation between 4-chlorophenylsemi- carbazide and 2-pyrrolidone in the presence of glacial acetic acid with aim to elucidating their structures and determining their antimicrobial activities. The ligand and its Palladium (II) complex were characterized using GC-MS, UV-Vis., IR, XRD, conductivity, melting point measurements and magnetic studies. The ligand and its Palladium (II) complex are pure crystals with space group symmetries of p3121 and p63/mmc and respective cell volumes of 130.907 and 349.022Å3. The complex is diamagnetic with square pyramidal geometry. GC-MS results revealed respective m/z values of 256.2 and 498.2 for the ligand and the complex. Ѵ(M-N) absorption band was observed at 621cm-1 only in the palladium (II) complex of the ligand. The ligand and its palladium (II) were tested in vitro antibacterial activities against S. aureus, E. coli, K. pneumonia, B. subtilis and for antifungal activities againt A. flavus and C. albicans. Among organisms tested, palladium (II) complex of the ligand proved to be a more potent antimicrobial agent against E. coli, B. subtilis and C albicans. Palladium (II) complex exhibited better antimicrobial activity than the free ligand.
